Thanks for reaching out!

We found this super cute old farmhouse outside of Speer, IL back in 2013. Our family quickly expanded in 2014, 2017 & again in 2022. Working on projects inside and out, we started the Hinkle Homestead in 2018. We began with just a few chickens and quickly grew into more and more adventures. We next added honeybees, then Kunekune pigs, a few peafowl and even emus. We made some changes and kept what we loved the most.

Did we see this coming when we brought home those first chick? Absolutely not. When friends and family questioned our sanity, we just kept going. Why say no to everything that's a little extra work- we are having a blast! We're teaching our kids where food comes from and their important roles they play in our world. Also teaching them how to care and enjoy these creatures, and that sometimes you drop a couple eggs and that's ok. We've learned lessons in creating and welcoming life and the hard realness of death & filling our freezer- a full circle.

Our goal has always been to have fun, but we really enjoy educating ourselves and others about all the little hidden facts that no one knows about.

A few years back, we had the most wonderful experience to meet the family that grew up here. They shared history and beautiful memories and inspiration. It seems like the history in this old 1930's farmhouse gets to live on almost 100 years later. Times are certainly different, but I think the love is the same.

Hinkle homestead house 1940?

"How we remember taking eggs once a week to Peoria to sell to the grocer to exchange for groceries. A trip to Peoria from Speer was quite a jaunt back in those days, especially in a 1931 Chevrolet Deluxe"
